Course Title: PE
Subject: PE
Age Range: Years 8
Course Date: 31/05/2010 - 04/06/2010
Course Details
‘Extending Able Students through Outdoor Adventurous Activities’
We are once again offering a very different type of PE course this year. Rather than using more traditional, school-based PE activities, we will focus on adventurous activities and how young people can use these to extend and challenge themselves.
Course Dates: Monday 31 May (commencing at noon) - Friday 4 June 2010 (finishing at 10.30 am).
The P.E course for Year 8 will be aimed at students who have an aptitude for PE in general. The activities used will include climbing, kayaking and sailing at a variety of venues in Somerset, as well as a range of challenging on-site activities such as Team Building and Low Ropes. Students will be encouraged to extend themselves through a progressive day programme for each off-site activity and will have an opportunity to explore further development of the skills gained each evening.
Students must be able to swim 50 metres in order to be accepted on this course.
Each activity will be suitable for students who have little or no knowledge of the activity, or for those who have some limited experience. However, those who already have extensive experience of an activity may find the course covering topics they are already aware of and possibly therefore not appropriate.
During the course we will also look to develop students’ personal and social skills in a supportive, residential environment, to help improve their confidence in dealing with others.
By the end of the course students will have improved their knowledge, skills and understanding of:
1. A range of challenging but extremely rewarding outdoor adventurous activities and how they could further develop their interest and qualifications in these.
2. Facing and overcoming personal and group challenges in potentially hazardous situations using an enhanced awareness of risk management.
3. How to work well with others, using the principles of successful teamwork.
4. The importance of different/alternative forms of exercise for a healthy lifestyle to improve both physical and mental fitness.
